Our Team
Gender Central is led by founder, Dr. Linda E. Carty. She was born in Nevis and completed her higher education in Canada, earning her PhD from the University of Toronto.
As an activist, Dr. Carty’s collaborative work interrogates the legacies of colonialism, capitalism, and patriarchy, and her work has been pivotal in shaping conversations about Black women’s experiences across the diaspora. She is committed to empowering women and girls through her workshops, trainings, and mentorship - which is a testament to her dedication to confronting systems of oppression by amplifying the experiences of marginalized persons.
Dr. Carty is also professor emerita at Syracuse University, where she developed courses that explored themes such as the exploitation of Black women’s labor, the impact of neoliberal policies on Caribbean societies, and the role of feminist movements in social justice struggles. Her work has appeared in numerous scholarly journals and edited volumes, and she is the author and editor of several key texts that are widely cited in feminist and Black diaspora studies.
